Hyderabad: The Private schools in the city have not been allowing Hyderabad district authorities to give Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine to children. The Measles Rubella vaccine is given to children between nine months to 15 years, to improve the immunity levels. Citing this, the district authorities are contemplating to approach World Health Organisation (WHO) to conduct an awareness campaign.

According to the WHO, Due to the increase of Measles vaccinations in the country, the MR death rate has dropped more than 50 per cent in the last 15 years. Additional campaign will boost the immunity of child and protect the entire community by eliminating transmission of Measles and Rubella.

The district authorities want to give this MR vaccine to all the school going kids. But the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) are reluctant to give the vaccination to the children. Deputy Immunization Officer S Jayamala said, “Many parents are under the false assumption that MR is not necessary. But Measles Rubella is highly safe and effective”.

Hyderabad district Joint Collector M Prashanthi said, “We want all the private schools to come forward and the parents should take the initiative, it is harmless vaccine.” She added the private schools must fill up 2A form which will have the details of the child.
