Hyderabad: Several promises by the government in the last few months to bring about a change in garbage management seem to have been restricted only to discussions and planning as several areas in Secunderabad continue to reek of un-segregated and dispersed garbage overflowing on the roads.
Residents from the area have expressed their concern over lack of dustbins which leads to open littering. Irregular management of the garbage and growing population of the mosquitoes too remain a concern. Local residents from Old Bowenpally, Regimental Bazaar Road, Old Lancer Lines, Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Tarnaka, Hubsiguda, Nacharam, etc.
have raised their concern over the raising amounts of garbage piling up and overflowing from the bins in the area. Domestic animals have been facing direct impact of the unhygienic conditions in the area. Moreover, lack of bins is leading to scattering of garbage as domestic animals scavenge for food from the waste.
Pranay Dev (29), a local resident from the Railway Quarters on Old Lancer Lines has been observing cows scavenging food from the littered garbage in an open plot in the area. Despite several complaints, he said, no attempts have been made for more than 3 months to clear the piledup garbage at the plot.
``The area is highly populated with a lot of open markets from where huge amount of garbage is collected every day. Lack of enough dustbins has lead to open littering where domestic animals find it easy to scavenge food. I have seen several cows consuming plastic bags out of the garbage” he said.
Local residents have further added that irrespective of the place, there are only a few GHMC dustbins in the area and they are inadequate to take the entire garbage produced.
Mervin (26), a resident from Trimulgherry said the area has got only one large GHMC dustbin for the entire colony which is irregularly maintained resulting in piling up and overflowing garbage out of the dustbin. ``The bins do not even have lids to prevent the overflowing of garbage. Dogs get into the bins and bring out all the garbage back to the road,” he said.
Dinesh (32), an auto driver from Regimental Bazaar Road said the area lacks green and blue dustbins required for segregation of the garbage. He has observed such a system is in vogue only around the areas of Banjara Hills and Jubilee hills where the segregation happens at an initial stage due to separate bins.
``Our area hardly has any bins and the garbage is only collected and piled up in certain corners to keep them off the road. The concept of segregation sounds good but to implement, there needs to be enough bins in the first place, ” he said. Several other local residents had similar complaints over the poor management of the garbage bins in the city as only a few have two different bins for dry and wet garbage whereas in rest of the areas, the situation remain the same.
