Sangareddy/ Medak: Small and medium irrigation projects in Sangareddy and Medak districts are flowing to the brim due to heavy rains that lashed the towns during this week. The Ghanpur Anicut and Pocharam reservoirs in Medak district, Narinja and Nallavagu projects in Sangareddy district are already overflowing with surplus water from their catchment areas.

There have been steady inflows into Singur project with 8,849 cusecs of water flowing into the reservoir till Tuesday. The current water level is 521.85 feet with storage of 21.107 tmcft in it. The maximum storage capacity in the reservoir is 29.5 tmcft. When the storage reaches 27 tmcft, water would be released downstream to Manjira reservoir, from where it can be released to Ghanpur Anicut and Nizam Sagar project.

Due to the overflows into the Ghanpur Anicut, this year there would not be any pressure to release water to Ghanpur from Singur project, leaving adequate water available for releasing to the 40,000 acres of ayacut in Andole constituency for irrigation purposes. The canal work has been completed last year and water was released to the ayacut during the last Rabi season. There are 20,000 acres of land under Ghanpur Anicut in Medak district which doesn’t need water from Singur during this Kharif season.

Farmers are very happy in the two districts, as rains have not been too harsh on them with heavy downpours this year, when compared to that of last year in September when crops on thousands of acres of land were destroyed. However, no major crop, life or property losses have been reported till now.
