Hyderabad: The long wait for the citizens of Hyderabad of travelling in Metro ended as it opened its gates for public on Wednesday. Though the authorities have instructed the passengers not to take selfies and photographs in the train and at Metro stations, people failed to follow the rules and started clicking pictures.

The excitement to take the first ride and tell the whole world was quite evident when passengers started clicking pictures as soon as they arrived in the precincts of Metro stations.

The short-comings of service was overwhelmed by the excitement of the first day. Seating arrangements in the trains were confusing and the authorities have not made any special arrangements for the senior citizens and physically-challenged. Without proper assigning of seats, many senior citizens were forced to stand during the journey.

As per the rules mentioned in the station, senior citizens, women and children should be allowed to board the train first. But hardly anyone was following the rules. As soon as the train arrived they all are in a hurry to rush inside ignoring the women, children and senior citizens. Expressing her disappointment, S Vijaya Kumari said, “I am very excited about the first ride. But there are no seats for women like in the RTC buses or Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS).”

Every Metro ride was packed to the brim. “Since it is the first day, there is not enough space. Hope things will improve with more services in the coming days,” said M Santosh, another commuter. Satisfied over the price and speed of the train, a selfie-crazy Mohsin Raza Mirza said, “AC bus fare from Ameerpet to Nagole costs Rs 60. In the Metro rail it is Rs 45.

Moreover, I will reach my destination much faster.” The excitement of the crowd was palpable. But it surprised all with the selfie-crazy crowd. Divya Iyer, a youngster herself, was surprised. “As soon as I entered the train all were busy with their mobile phones clicking selfies rather than finding a seat for themselves,” she said.

It is a major challenge for the Metro to curb photoshoots for it raises safety issues. “People are excited since it is the first day. We are trying to make continuous announcements to avoid this situation, said N Srinivas, an official of Metro rail safety team.
