Hanamkonda: Maoist party former central committee member KommallaSeshagiri Rao alias Gopanna (45) allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a speeding train on the outskirts of the city on Friday.
His dead body was found on the railway tracks at Unikicharla near Kazipet railway station. Financial problems were said to be the reason behind his extreme step. Kazipet GRP inspector Venkatesh said that according to preliminary investigation, the death seems like a suicide.
The deceased was into real estate business and said to be facing financial crisis, the police said. He hails from Velikatte village in Thorrurmandal and was living at Waddepally area in Hanamkonda.
Gopanna went underground in the year 1989 and was the key member who was actively servingMaoist party in various capacities from 1990 to 2005. He was a Maoist at Andhra Orissa Border (AOB) state committee member and involved in eight murders, several blastings and arson cases until hisarrest by East Godavari police at Rajahmundry in March 2005.
In the same month, his wife Naragoni Manjula alias Swarnakka surrendered before East Godavari police after Gopanna was jailed at Rajahmundry. She contested as ZPTC from Thorrurmandal and won the election. They both associated with TRS and Congress for some time and now were politically inactive.
Though the police claimed Gopanna’s death as a suicide, his family members and friends were differing with their notion. According to them the deceased when working in Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam developed contacts with real estate businessmen and engaged in realty business there.
Differences cropped up between Gopanna and his partners and he was also allegedly kidnapped by his partners a couple of days back and was subjected to severe physical torture for 15 days. He was released after family members complained to Rajahmundry police.
On Friday, some of his partners have reached Warangal and visited his residence enquiring for him. Gopanna who left his home at round 9.30 am was found dead during afternoon hours. “The financial problems he was facing were minor in nature but the pressure from his partners was heavy” said Srinivas, a relative of the deceased.
The body was taken to MGM Hospital for post-mortem. MLA ErrabelliDayakar Rao and former Maoist Lanka Papi Reddy visited the suicide spot and expressed condolence over his death. After entering into realty business Gopanna severed his relations with old friends, Papi Reddy said.
