Hyderabad: The TRS government and RTC employees are heading for a showdown. Even as Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao stated in no uncertain terms that blackmailing tactics by the staff were not warranted, employees owing allegiance to eight unions have decided to up the ante from Friday.

Disapproving CM's remarks against their demands and government's stand, the employees in 90-odd bus depots across the state will be attending duties wearing black bands and during lunch hour they would conduct peaceful demonstrations at their respective places.

RTC JAC joint secretary K Hanmanthu called upon the Chief Minister to take cue from the states that are successfully running bus transport for the convenience of citizens instead of states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh which failed on this front.

He said that there was no change in their stance on going to strike anytime from May 24 onwards. According to Hanmanthu, eight of the ten unions are on the same page when it came to fight for demands.

"RTC staff are disappointed with CM's remarks. We are working with commitment and are pinning hopes on the government to come to rescue of the state transport and as well as the staff," he said. Co-convener V S Rao felt that the government should try to resolve the issues amicably instead of simply ignoring the demands.

"We have put our 42 demands before the ministers’ panel and the ball is in their court. The state government should let us know that it’s ready to give this much and not possible beyond that. Then we can deliberate accordingly. However, without doing all these, how the government can set aside RTC employees’ concerns and issues," he questioned. Nearly 52,000 employees, including drivers, conductors, cleaners and supervisors, are on the RTC rolls.

However, TMU (Telangana Mazdoor Union) which is the recognized union wants to give some more time to the government to decide on their demands and hence would not resort to protests. TMU leader Ashwadhama Reddy said that their union has over 37,000 employees alone. “Talks are going on with the ministers’ panel to explain the issues deeply. We are of the hope that something acceptable to both the parties would be worked out at the earliest.”
