Hyderabad: HMDA which is usually into construction of infrastructure and amenities like flyovers, roads, parks etc. for public got involved in educational activity for the first time. The metropolitan body has come forward to construct a ladies’ hostel building for Nizam College, foundation for which was laid on Tuesday.

Apart from donating Rs five crore for the project, HMDA took the onus of constructing the building under its supervision. The total cost of the project is Rs 6.25 crore, with university or college set to take care of the remaining Rs 1.25 crore.

The hostel building would be a G+2 one with nearly 50 rooms. Two or three girls could be accommodated in each room. The metropolitan body would be calling for tenders to finalise the contractor and start works at the earliest. There is ample space available in Nizam college premises and the same would be used for the girls’ hostel building as well.

HMDA commissioner T Chiranjeevulu said this is the first time that metropolitan body is into social infrastructure work. He said that erstwhile HUDA had constructed mini-stadiums at various places in the city earlier. The metropolitan body would be utilising interest amount from funds generated under LRS and e-auction of lands for this cause.

Minister K T Rama Rao, who is an alumnus of Nizam College, had promised to construct a ladies hostel last year, and accordingly the project was set into motion now. Authorities said that meritorious girls from districts are facing hardships to study at Nizam due to lack of a hostel facility. Osmania varsity has ladies hostels in campus premises, but Nizam College did not have that facility until now.

Once hostel is ready by next year, officials say that girls from various Telangana districts would be benefitted and they would show interest to enroll in this noted OU constituent and autonomous college.
