Malkajgiri: With three days to go for the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, hectic activity is being witnessed in the market here as colourful idols in various shapes and sizes of the elephant-headed god are getting ready. Several traders, including Vinod, selling the idols told The Hans India that there has been a marginal increase of two per cent in the number being made available for the customers this year.

The Neredmet Crossroads has turned into a beehive of activity with traders keeping a large number of idols ready. Vinod stated that ‘popular’ murthies, besides those made in Dhoolpet are being arranged for sale. As September 13 falls on Thursday, customers are already found to be buying the idols. Apparently, the traders are happy with the sales.

The traders informed THI that every year they invest Rs.10 lakh in making of the idols. But this year the amount has gone up to Rs.15 lakh. They maintained that profits would be possible only if no murthies remain with them unsold and that they have been selling as a low rate. With the sales last year not encouraging they were left with many unsold, which they had to immerse themselves, after performing pooja.
