Alliance Française Hyderabad is staging a French play with English subtitles, L’Amant (The Lover) based on a story by Marguerite Duras, presented by Maud Andrieux on November 3 at Ravindra Bharathi from 7.30pm. The play is an autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras, published in 1984. In her short and powerful novel, which won the Prix Goncourt in France in 1984, Duras recounts the largely autobiographical story of her family’s struggles in Southeast Asia.
In 1929, a 15-year-old nameless girl is traveling by ferry across the Mekong Delta, returning from a holiday at her family home in the town of Sa Dec, to her boarding school in Saigon. She attracts the attention of a 27-year-old son of a Chinese business magnate, a young man of wealth and heir to a fortune. He strikes up a conversation with the girl; she accepts a ride back to town in his chauffeured limousine.
