Alwal: People passing on Trimulgherry Road are facing inconvenience due to the foul stench emanating from the dump yard located near Mahamta Gandhi Community Hall. If passers-by face such inconvenience, imagine the suffering of the residents of nearby colonies, especially Shastri Nagar, Chinnamma Thota, Trimulgherry Village and Lal Bazar that are the most affected. The area has become unlivable due to the foul smell coming from the dump yard. The residents of nearby colonies staged protests in the past demanding the shifting of the dump yard, but they withdrew the protests after getting assurances from authorities to address the issue. However, authorities concerned have not taken any measures to address the issue, so far. The garbage collected from eight wards of cantonment is being dumped in the yard through GHMC trucks and trolleys.

The poor and middle-class people of the area used to perform functions and marriages at the community hall, as it was affordable to them. Several young people used to visit the library and gym located at the hall. But all this changed in recent days due the foul smell, and the people stopped using the facility. Locals have made several attempts to bring the issue to the notice of local officials, but there was no response from them. Even the complaints to the member of Cantonment Board, Bhagyasri, were of no use. Locals said that there was a need to protect the community hall, which has historical significance. They demand the authorities concerned to shift the dump yard to a place far away from residential areas.
