Begumpet: The 12th “Ghar ki Biryani” contest organised by The Hans India is quite remarkable in terms of holding unique social gatherings at Methodist Colony, Begumpet on Saturday. The residents and their guests participated enthusiastically in the food festival and the whole scene resembled a great get-together. While 30 housewives decided to showcase their special biryani cooking talent, the rest inter-mingled with their neighbourhood and took active participation in each and every part of the programme.

It became a sort of a Saturday afternoon weekend get-together for the residents and the guests. The chef, K Karunakar, had to sweat a lot for two reasons: one, he had to taste a variety of 30 veg and non-veg home-cooked biryanis including some hot and spicy ones; and the other, to choose the winning biryani from a trove of best cooked ones. He had quite a tough time choosing winner in veg and non-veg categories. The veg biryani contest winner was Lakshmi; and, Monika bagged the cap in the non-veg category.

Both the winners received 5 litres of sunflower oil of Goldiva, which was the sponsor of the event. The winners will have direct entry to the “Ghar ki Biryani” finale contest where they have the opportunity to win around Rs 6 lakh worth of prizes. The veg biryani winner Lakshmi said, “My friend from this colony told me about this competition, as I love cooking, I came from Jeedimetla to participate in the event.” She thanked The Hans India and the sponsor Goldivia for organising such an event where she could showcase her cooking talent.

When asked about the specialty in her veg biryani, she said that she made koftas of paneer and added them in the biryani. The paneer kofta biryani is a delicacy liked by all, especially the children, and it is also nutritious, she informed. The winner from the other category, Monika, said that she made the non-veg biryani in a very old and traditional method by using homemade masalas. She thanked her mother and mother-in-law for helping her in making this nawabi style biryani.

The colony coordinator, K Krishna Veni, lauded the Hans India for organising a women-oriented programme, especially because it gave an opportunity to colony women, who mostly spend their time in kitchens, to display their talents. After seeing the event, many non-participant housewives came to her and were regretful that they stayed away from such a wonderful event.

“I have seen many events, but this one is really a special one and the participating housewives are truly elated and are feeling so confident in front of their children and other family members. I congratulate The Hans India and the sponsors and wish them to organise more such events,” she added.
