Mahabubabad: Mathematics expresses itself everywhere and is an integral part of life, said in-charge District Educational Officer (DEO) S Srinivasa Chary.

He addressed a gathering of students and staff at Telangana State Model School here on Wednesday where district-level mathematics contest was held.

The contest was organised by the department of school education and Telangana Mathematics Forum (TMF) in view of National Mathematics Day that falls on December 22.

Srinivasa Chary further said that mathematics is a science, an art in itself and a language and hence the teachers should make efforts to help the students understand and appreciate the subject in an effective manner. In addition to teaching techniques and tools to solve mathematical problems, ‘mathematical capacity’ in students should be developed.

The DEO also wanted the teachers to create awareness among the students on the contributions made by the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Mathematics Day.

The mathematics contest is an effort to highlight the significance of mathematics and encourage young talent in the schools to pursue the subject at advanced levels, said district science officer V Gurunadha Rao.

The competition was held in two categories; juniors-classes VI TO VII and seniors-classes IX AND X. The school education additional director Balaram, the school principal A Amaravathi, TMF representatives B Mahesh, KVS Chary, PJ Vivekananda and others were present.
