Mahabubabad: The district police arrested CPI (ML) New Democracy (Rayala Faction) state committee member and the district secretary Dhanasari Sammaiah alias Gopanna and recovered fire arm and ammunition from him. Superintendent of Police N Koti Reddy, who produced him before the media here on Friday, informed that one 8 MM rifle, rifle magazine, 10 live rounds of ammunition, a pouch and kit bag with party literature and letter pads were recovered from him.

49-year-old Gopanna hails from Enchagudem in Kothaguda mandal in the district and has been underground since 1986. The police received information that Gopanna was hiding at his wife’s house at Rahul Nagar in Mahabubabad town to extort money from a contractor. Following which the police sub-inspectors Ravinder and Tirupathi and team raided the house on Thursday late evening hours but Gopanna escaped from the house. Combing operation was launched with additional forces and he was later arrested at brick kilns near Munneru stream where he was hiding.

The SP Koti Reddy informed that the naxal activist was involved in an exchange of fire with the police in 2004 at Enchagudem, blasted belt shop at Kothaguda and assaulted a person in 2010 and murder of two persons in 2012 in Gudur mandal. The arrested naxal was also involved in extorting money from civil contractors, Singareni contractors, mining contractors, tendu leaf contractors and petty traders in Jayashanker Bhupalpally and Kothagudem districts.

A case with the crime number: 413/2017 under sections 120(b) and 109 of IPC, section 8 (1) of APPS Act, section 25(1) b Indian Arms Act and sections 10, 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was booked against Gopanna. He would be produced before the court, Koti Reddy said.

Superintendent of Police N Koti Reddy wanted the underground cadre of CPI (ML) ND factions to quit extortions and give up arms and join the mainstream. He appealed the public to inform the police about the movement of armed squads involved in extortions and unlawful activities. The SP appreciated the police officials and personnel for arresting the most wanted naxal Gopanna. It might be noted that the activists of CPI (ML) ND (Rayala) have staged protests at Mahabubabad on Thursday demanding the cops to produce Gopanna in the court.
