chinhinClass XI student Nameirakpam Chingkheinganba became the youngest person from the North East to conquer Mt Everest on Saturday.A Student of Kanan Devi School, Manipur, Chingkheinganba (16) scaled the highest peak (29,029ft) at 5.30 am along with Ansu Jamsepa of Arunachal Pradesh; David Zohmangaiha, Mizoram; Tarun Saikia, Assam; Wangsuk Myrthong, Meghalaya and Kazi Sherpa of Sikkim.

Chingkheinganba's mother Nameirakpam Ongbi Savitri (50) was ecstatic on hearing the news. "We haven't slept in the last few days. I was worried whether my child would be able to scale such a mighty mountain. I am very proud of my son's success," she said.

Ansu Jamsepa of Arunachal Pradesh has also created history by becoming the first woman, who is also a mother, to scale the world's highest peak thrice. David Zohmangaiha, Wangsuk and Tarun Saikia have also made their states proud by becoming the first to scale the Everest.So far, the youngest person to climb Mt Everest is 13-year-old American Jordan Romero, who achieved the feat on May 22, 2010 while the youngest Indian to do it is 16-year-old Delhi school boy Arjun Bajpayee.

On Friday, 30-year-old N Bidyapati became the first woman from Manipur to scale the Everest along with Anand Gurung (Sikkim) and Nima Lama (Arunachal Pradesh).
