Let’s have a look at the security features that WhatsApp offers.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is used by more than 2 billion users across the globe. WhatsApp messaging app now covers around 25% of the world's population. WhatsApp's growth is credited for the easy-to-use interface, a host of features for individual and group users, and without any advertisements.

WhatsApp's popularity also makes it a goal for cybercriminals. The end-to-end encryption gives some security, but attackers are hardworking and smart to evade the protection firewalls.

Earlier this week, WhatsApp said, "Strong encryption acts like an unbreakable digital lock that keeps the information you send over WhatsApp secure, helping protect you from hackers and criminals. Messages are only kept on your phone, and no one in between can read your messages or listen to your calls, not even us. Your private conversations stay between you."

Let's have a look at the security features that WhatsApp offers:

Two-step verification

Enabled two-step verification for your WhatsApp account. This verification brings an additional layer of security to your account. When you're resetting and verifying your WhatsApp account, this will need you to enter a six-digit PIN. The feature is suitable if your phone is stolen or lost. Enable the feature by going to Settings > Account > two-step verification.

Secure your profile

WhatsApp allows you to control who can see your key profile information. Ensure, you have managed the profile information to be shared with "everyone", "your contacts", or "nobody." You can turn off the last seen feature as well. Change the settings for profile picture, about, and status stories based on your preferences.

Group Users

Groups are one of the most significant elements of WhatsApp. For some people it can be a little pesky as well. WhatsApp also allows users to block others to add you to any groups. This allows you to decide over which group you want to be part of. To enable this feature, open Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups and select one of three options: "Everyone," "My Contacts," or "My Contacts Except".

Enable Touch ID/Face ID

WhatsApp now allows you to unlock it on your phone through a fingerprint sensor. On the latest iPhones, you can enable Face ID (facial recognition). The Touch ID/fingerprint sensor unlock feature is offered for Android smartphone users. The feature is useful as it does away with the need for third-party applications that brought in similar secondary lock/unlock through PIN or swipe gestures.
