Apple Considers Foldable iPads, But Market May Have to Wait
Apple's leap into foldable tech: From iPads to iPhones with OLED displays, 2025 promises an exciting shift in Apple's lineup.
Apple is reportedly in the developmental stages of creating foldable iPads, aligning with the company's shift towards OLED displays for MacBooks and iPads. While the launch timeline remains uncertain, recent reports from Nikkei Asia indicate that Apple is exploring the integration of flexible OLED screens in iPads to pave the way for foldable devices. However, the report does not provide a specific timeline for the release of these anticipated foldable iPads.
This isn't the first instance of rumours surrounding Apple's foray into foldable technology. Previous reports indicated that Apple was in an "intensive development" phase with suppliers, potentially leading to limited production of foldable iPads starting in late 2024. Speculations hinted at a product announcement in late 2024 or early 2025.
Persistent rumours about Apple's foldable iPad plans find support in recent patent filings, showcasing features like a hinge mechanism with movable flaps to protect the device when folded, an OLED display, and a self-healing folding screen crease.
In addition to foldable iPads, Apple is also progressing towards adopting OLED displays in its high-end iPad models by 2024, with MacBook models expected to follow suit in 2025. While some may argue that Apple is slightly behind competitors in adopting OLED technology, the move towards flexible OLED screens on iPads could serve as a precursor to Apple's entry into the foldable device market.
Notably, Apple is also rumoured to be developing a foldable iPhone, potentially named iPhone Fold, set to debut in 2025. Reports suggest a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series. Despite reports indicating the prioritization of foldable iPads over iPhones in 2023, Apple's secretive approach leaves uncertainty about the actualization of these plans. Given the current prominence of foldable technology in the market, especially after the success of devices like the OnePlus Open in 2023, it seems likely that Apple would explore opportunities in this dynamic space. However, until Apple officially unveils its plans, the details and timeline of its entry into the foldable device arena remain speculative.
