Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the company's ambitious AI-focused restructuring has not unfolded without challenges, admitting that mistakes were made during the process and warning that more could occur as the technology landscape continues to evolve rapidly.

The admission comes after Meta undertook one of the largest organisational transformations in its recent history. Earlier this year, the company eliminated approximately 8,000 jobs and reassigned thousands of employees as part of its strategy to become a more AI-centric organisation. The restructuring was designed to accelerate Meta’s artificial intelligence initiatives and strengthen its competitive position in a rapidly changing technology market.

In an internal memo reviewed by a famous publication, Zuckerberg addressed employees directly about the difficulties involved in reshaping a company of Meta’s scale around emerging technologies.

"Given the complexity of these changes, we've made mistakes and will almost certainly make more," he wrote, while adding that he remains focused on providing as much stability as possible during future organisational changes.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has invested heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, research, and talent acquisition. The company is among several major technology firms increasingly integrating AI into their operations, products, and long-term business strategies. Reports indicate that the restructuring affected a significant portion of the workforce, with role changes and transfers potentially impacting nearly one-fifth of Meta’s employees.

According to company figures, Meta employed close to 78,000 people at the end of March. The workforce reduction carried out in May represented roughly 10 percent of its global staff. In addition to the layoffs, around 7,000 employees were reassigned to AI-related projects, including initiatives focused on training and improving AI systems.

Despite acknowledging the challenges, Zuckerberg attempted to reassure employees about their future at the company. He stated that Meta currently has no plans for additional company-wide layoffs during the remainder of the year, although he stopped short of making absolute guarantees given the uncertain nature of the broader technology environment.

"I don't want to overpromise because the world is changing in ways that are out of our control," Zuckerberg said, according to the memo.

The CEO also highlighted Meta’s efforts to create new opportunities for employees whose responsibilities have shifted as a result of the AI transition. He explained that the introduction of AI-focused positions has enabled the company to streamline certain teams while maintaining flexibility to move employees where needed.

"By creating important new roles for people, this also allowed us to shrink the size of teams knowing that if we make mistakes in some places, then we could transfer some people back," he wrote.

Beyond workforce changes, Meta is also taking steps to strengthen employee engagement and collaboration. Zuckerberg revealed plans to increase spending on team-building initiatives, including larger budgets for company gatherings and offsite events. The company is additionally preparing a major hackathon in July aimed at encouraging cross-functional cooperation and accelerating the development of its next generation of AI technologies.

As Meta continues its AI transformation, Zuckerberg’s message reflects both confidence in the company’s direction and recognition of the challenges that accompany such a sweeping organisational shift.
