A peek into lives of Gujarati weavers

Alliance Francaise hosts a documentary screening and presentation on Patola – double Ikkat by Dr.Balamani, an independent Art Historian, Art Critic & Cultural analyst, from the Department of Art History & Aesthetics, Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S.University of Baroda.

She delivered special lectures at many institutions and universities, curated many thematic exhibitions on modern and contemporary arts, held art camps, art workshops.

She also makes short documentary films on art/artists/crafts, edited a book "Museums in Gujarat" for Directorate of Gujarat Museums, and contributed articles too for the same.

Patan Patola is her a documentary film on the ikat weavers of Patan, in Gujrat.

They weave Patola, the double ikat woven sarees, which are rich in colour, intricate in design, pattern and use special technique.

Patan weavers are the master weavers in Ikat or tie and dye weaves.

Generally, to weave one saree it takes 6 to 24 months and price starts from Rs 1 lakh.

In this documentary Balamani aims to show the long and laborious process of making Patola sarees and also to investigate the present situation of the weavers.
