Khammam: The intense heatwave conditions prevailing in the erstwhile Khammam district have been taking a heavy toll on people. The soaring

temperatures have claimed 12 lives on Monday alone, while eight persons succumbed on Sunday in various mandals of Khammam district. While on May 20, two persons died, on May 23, seven died, according to sources.

Most of the dead persons were of in the age group of 50 and 80. A few were aged between 35 and 50. Sources said that nearly 45 persons were said to have died due to health issues related to intense heatwave conditions.

Meanwhile, the day temperatures crossed 44 degrees Celsius mark in Khammam and Kothagudem districts. According to officials, maximum temperatures of 44.3 degrees Celsius and 45.1 degrees Celsius were reported at many places in Khammam and Kothagudem districts on Tuesday.

The Met department officials have informed that the heatwave conditions were expected to prevail till May 31 as maximum temperatures are expected to rise 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above the prevailing temperatures in the two districts.
