Dharna Chowk: A protest was staged here on Tuesday condemning illegal arrests and false cases being filed on leaders of various people organisations. CPI national secretary Narayana, state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, noted academician Chukka Ramaiah, Professor Kodandaram, Professor Ramkoti, Cheruku Sudhakar, Vimalakka, Professor Vishweshwar Rao, New Democracy leader Katta Rama, Gaddam Lakshman, Professor Hara Gopal and others participated in the protest.

Speaking during the protest, Professor Hara Gopal alleged that rights activists who questioned the government were being branded as Naxalites and imprisoned on false cases. He said that Telangana state was formed with the support of various people organizations, but leaders of those organizations were being imprisoned by the state government. He stressed the need for a movement for the removal of UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act), similar to the one fought for cancellation of TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act). Condemning repressive measures of the state government, he said that present practice of seeking permission for protest was anti-democratic.

Expressing his unhappiness over the current state of politics, Chukka Ramaiah condemned the branding of leaders of people associations as 'Urban Naxalites.' He also condemned pervasive use of money in current politics and opposed handing over of resources to corporate companies.

PL Vishweshwar Rao said that the state government said that permissions need to be taken to conduct protests but never gives permission when sought. Criticising the TRS government, he said that only recruitment that was conducted in the state was that of police and had not issued single notification for Group exams.

CPI leader Narayana alleged that BJP government had been destroying rights of people by passing anti-democratic laws and termed the laws as anti-constitutional. He said that BJP government had been misusing investigative agencies for harassing its opponents.

Professor Kodandaram urged the state government to create atmosphere conducive to democracy and stop repressive actions against rights activists. He demanded for the release of Professor Qasim.

Among those who participated in the protest were N Venugopal, Nakka Narayana, Professor Lakshmi Narayana, Achyutha Ramaiah, Ambati Nagaiah and others.
