Hyderabad: Lifting all the 14 gates of the Babli project in Maharashtra increased inflows into river Godavari in the beginning of monsoon this year.

All the available water will fetch irrigation needs in Telangana in the current farming season. Due to incessant rains in both Telangana and Maharashtra, at least 5,500 cusecs of water is flowing into Sreeram Sagar project every day.

This water is being utilised for irrigation needs in the ensuing Kharif season in T state. Water will reach up to Suryapet via the developed canal system under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation scheme.

Sreeram Sagar chief engineer B Shankar predicted Telangana will receive good inflows from Babli project and the water is being utilised optimally with the available developed canal network connecting all north and south Telangana districts. A panel of Central Water Commission (CWC) officials and irrigation officials of Telangana and Maharashtra were present at the dam site duting the release of water.

The Babli project was constructed in the catchment of Sreeram Sagar project. As directed by the Supreme Court, Babli gates will be opened on July 1 and shut on October 28 every year. As per the court order, 0.56 tmc of water will be released from Babli project to the downstream.
