Lok Sabha polls witness low turnout in Warangal

Warangal/Mahabubabad: Both Warangal (SC) and Mahabubabad Lok Sabha (ST) constituencies have recorded a low voter turnout on Thursday compared to previous elections. While Warangal recorded 60 per cent, the turnout in Mahabubabad was 64.46 per cent.

Of the seven Assembly segments, Warangal West recorded a low voter turnout with just 42.75 per cent. In fact, all the segments have witnessed a low turnout compared to Assembly elections held in December. The segment wise percentage: Station Ghanpur 63%; Palakurthy 71%; Parkal 67%; Warangal

East 55%; Wardhannapet 72.10% and Bhupalpally 52%.

The stats suggest Thursday's turnout for Warangal Lok Sabha was lowest in the recent past. The voter turnout was 68.50 in the 2015 by-poll; 78.54 in 2014; 69.32 in 2009; 75.90 in 2004; 75.50 in 1999.

The polling for Warangal (SC) Parliamentary Constituency (PC) started in 1,859 polling stations at 7 am was peaceful, the Returning Officer (RO) Prashanth Jeevan Patil said. It's learnt that eight EVMs that developed technical snags during the mock polling early in the morning have been replaced.

Patil said the EVMs would be stored in the Enumamula Market Yard. The results of the Lok Sabha election 2019 will be announced on May 23. He said that foolproof security arrangements have been made for the protection of EVMs. He said that EVMs will be under the surveillance of CCTV cameras till counting takes place. The footage will also be made accessible to anyone who has doubts about the security.

Elsewhere in Mahabubabad Parliament (ST) constituency, the voter turnout was par below compared to 82.81 in 2014 general elections. The segment wise percentage: Dornakal 68.20%; Mahabubabad 60.20%; Narsampet 60.76%; Mulugu 62.85%; Pinapaka 65.43%; Yellandu 65.75% and Bhadrachalam 68.06%.

Around 2,500 voters in DC Thanda boycotted polls in protest against the government for merging their thanda in Wardhannapet municipality. It's learnt that the residents have been demanding demerger of their thanda from Wardhannapet municipality for some time.
