Student leaders demand that the state government release fellowships immediately and pay mess bills of students

Osmania University: Two groups of OU students of Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) took out rallies with a slogan 'Twitter talk with KTR', one from Arts College and another from Commerce and Business and Management College on Friday and tweeted their issues to KTR.

Student leaders demanded increase fellowships of PG students to Rs 3,000 and PhD students to Rs 8,000, establish a special fund for the development of the university, improve basic amenities at campus hostels, build new hostels to research scholars and provide financial assistance to purchase laptops from RUSA funds.

Speaking on the occasion, state vice president of PDSU S Nageshwar Rao said that research took a hit as fellowships were not given to students.

Thousands of students write entrance exams but only very few get seats in OU colleges, but they are made to pay equal to other private colleges, which is unfair, he said.

He said that the same amount of Rs 1,500 was being paid to both degree as well as PG College students, which was unfair to the latter.

PG students had to do part time jobs and search for other means of earning to pay mess bills, and are not able to focus on academic activities, he lamented.

He expressed his unhappiness on the attitude of Telangana government towards the university which has been the hotbed of Telangana agitation.

He hoped that a young leader like KTR would understand the problems faced by the university and come forward to address them.

He demanded the state government to release fellowships immediately and pay mess bills of students.

He warned that they would unite all the student organisations and start a student movement against the government.
