Khammam: The Mulakalapalli police on Friday seized about 1.2 tonne of banned catfish from a van and buried them at Pogallapalli village in the mandal under the Kothagudem district.
According to sources, police received information that some people were smuggling banned catfish from Eluru to Bhadrachalam via Mulakalapalli.
The police stopped the vehicle at Pogallapalli village and seized the fish. Locals said catfish smuggling has been going on for quite some time, but the officials were not taking any steps.
They alleged that recently smugglers left thousands of tortoises on the roadside in the mandal after seeing a police vehicle.
