Hyderabad: Tension prevailed when the BJP, BJYM and ABVP leaders and activists made a bid to stage a protest near Dr B R Ambedkar statue at Telugu Talli Flyover and lay a siege to Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao here on Tuesday.

In response to the call given by the BJP on Monday, a large number of BJYM activists tried to break the police cordon and barge into Pragati Bhavan.

The police took into custody the BJYM Hyderabad district president Vinay along with several members of the BJP's youth wing.

It may be mentioned here that the party called for State-wide protests alleged the State government's apathy in taking action against those responsible for the Intermediate results fiasco.

It also urged its activists to wage a fight against the police shifting BJP State president K Laxman to NIMS when he went on indefinite fast on Monday.

Police had a tough time thwarting the protestors from staging protest at the Chief Minister's residence.

As the police took one group of protestors into custody, another group emerged. Scuffles also broke out between protestors and the police at times.

BJYM alleged that its leader Bhanu Prakash had fallen ill as police beat him with fists following a verbal dual. He was whisked away by a DCM van, it was alleged.

Similarly, the BJP MLC N Ramachander Rao was arrested by police along with several other leaders, while they were on their way to stage a protest near Dr B R Ambedkar statue at Telugu Talli Flyover near Tank Bund.

Former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, party State general secretaries Chinta Samba Murthy, G Premender Reddy, OBC Morcha state president K Narasimha Yadav, City general secretary Gowtham Rao, former city deputy mayor Subhas Chandra, party media committee convenor Sudhakar Sarama was among those who were stopped at different locations and shifted to police stations.
