Warangal: It's been almost three years since the split of Warangal; however, the State government still appears to have plans to tinker with the present set up.

Even though there is a demand for rejig of districts since Warangal was split into five districts – Warangal Urban, Rural, Jangaon, Mahabubabad and Jayashankar-Bhupalpally – in October 2016, the State government had ruled out possibility of any such plans.

However soon after retaining power for the second successive time, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao carved out another district (sixth) with Mulugu as its headquarters splitting Jayashankar-Bhuapalplly district.

On the other hand, the demand for merger of Urban and Rural districts is making rounds for some time.

The inordinate delay in finalising the headquarters for Warangal Rural district, which is currently functioning from Urban district, has also added fuel to the speculation.

If one goes by the hint given by Minister for Panchayat Raj Errabelli Dayakar Rao, the government is mulling over changing the names of Warangal Rural and Urban districts as Warangal and Hanamkonda respectively.

It may be recalled here that denizens in the city vehemently opposed the split of city into Warangal and Hanamkonda districts citing it as detrimental to the culture and heritage of the Kakatiya Capital. This has led the government to drop the idea of carving out Hanamkonda district.

Against this backdrop, the proposal to change the Urban district name as Hanamkonda has come forward again.

The difference between the proposal then and now is that in 2016 the city was divided into two, and now there would be no changes in the existing set up. Warangal Urban will be renamed as Hanamkonda and the existing Rural district will be called as Warangal.

With Errabelli Dayakar Rao, in a meeting with TRS cadres at Lyadella village under Damera mandal on Sunday, hinting changes in the existing administrative set up such as rechristening of districts, the speculation of various possibilities picked up wind.

One among them was merger of Parkal division, which is in Rural district currently with Jayashankar-Bhupalpally district.

It's said that Parkal MLA Challa Dharma Reddy had written a letter to the CM in this regard.

The grapevine is also rife that Warangal district integrated collectorate complex will come up on the Azam Jahi Mills grounds in Warangal.
