The Telangana High Court directed the state government to appoint the State Women Commission by December 31.

The Telangana High Court directed the state government to appoint the State Women Commission by December 31. The court further said that the state chief secretary Somesh Kumar will be summoned to explain if the appointment is delayed.

The women commission has been without a chairperson since July 2018. Despite repeated criticism, the Telangana government is delaying the appointment of chairperson for the women commission.

The court was dealing with the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a social activist Ramya Rao.

Earlier, Sunitha Krishan, chief functionary and co-founder of Prajwala, a non-governmental organisation tweeted to TRS working president and minister KT Rama Rao saying that it is not a good sign to have a state without a functional women commission for more than two years.

"If there is no suitable woman within the party then to nominate suitable women with no political affiliation is a good idea," she said.
