Visakhapatnam: Demanding month-long salary, contract labourers working at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant called for a two-day strike from Friday.

Around 7,000 labourers took part in the strike near various gates of the plant on the day one. Raising slogans to pay the salary during the lockdown months, they staged a protest following social distancing and wearing masks.

Since they are getting half the salary during lockdown period, the contract labourers demanded full salary in order to meet mounting expenses. There are about 14,000 contract labourers engaged in works at various departments of the plant.

A meeting was held by the union leaders to involve the rest of the contract labourers in the on-going strike at the plant.

CITU, AITUC, INTUC and HMMYSRTUC among other unions took part in the strike.
