Vijayawada: Dr BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), Andhra Pradesh, is preparing to launch its admission process soon, vice-chancellor Prof S Vijaya Bhaskar Rao said. He stated that the university is currently awaiting approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC), and admissions would commence as soon as the approval is granted.

At a meeting held on Tuesday with officials and staff at the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) at Mangalagiri, Prof Vijaya Bhaskar Rao noted that the university’s establishment in the reorganised state (Andhra Pradesh) officially began this year. He said all necessary steps for the university’s development are underway and urged officers and staff to extend their full cooperation.

Prof Rao said details of teaching faculty and staff from 76 Open University centres across the state have been collected and are being digitised as part of a comprehensive computerisation initiative. Nearly 40,000 students are expected to enrol in various courses through the university. The vice-chancellor added that the institution is preparing to introduce new, industry-relevant courses designed to enhance students’ employability, with necessary UGC approvals to be sought soon.

Prof Rao underscored the transformative impact of Dr BR Ambedkar Open University, which has enabled thousands, including those in remote rural areas, to pursue higher education via distance learning. He reiterated the university’s commitment to expanding its services in Andhra Pradesh and offering more quality courses in the coming years. Acknowledging certain challenges faced by staff, Prof. Rao assured that measures are already being taken to address these issues. He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and education minister Nara Lokesh for their support in strengthening and advancing the university.

Dr Velaga Joshi, OSD of Dr BR Ambedkar Open University, deputy director Ajanta Kumar, and several other officials attended the meeting.
