Kakinada: As per instructions of District Collector D Muralidhar Reddy, the marketing officials set up special counters for onions at Rythu Bazaars here on Saturday. In these counters, the onions will be sold at Rs 25 a kg for each person per day.

In Kakinada, the officials have procured around 110 quintals of Kurnool onions. Gandhi Nagar Rythu Bazaar Estate Officer Tummala Venkat Rajan said, "We are selling onions at subsidised price in the counters set up at Rythu Bazaars from 7 am to 10 and 4 pm to 6 pm." He said we have procured 56 bags of onions each bag weighting 45 kg from Kurnool district.

Rajan said 30 bags were already sold on Saturday and remaining bags would be sold on Sunday. RTC Complex Rythu Bazaar Estate Officer R Srinivasa Rao said onions were supplied to Rythu Bazaars depending on the demand.

A resident Kalaga Savitramma said onions are being sold between Rs 85-100 a kg in the open market. Marketing officials said the new crop of onions will be harvested within four to five months and they will get supply from Kurnool in 10 to 15 days.
