Tirupati: AP Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd is planning to set up electrical sub-stations in lorry-borne containers, which will cut costs considerably, mainly in terms of land.

The discom has called for tenders to build these advanced mobile electrical substations in Rayalaseema and Nellore districts.

One such substation will come soon at TTD Sridevi Complex site in Tirupati city. Sources say these mobile sub-stations will bring down the cost of construction by 50 per cent.

Besides lower installation and less time, they an be moved easily from one location to another location where it is required. According to them, in the country, only Kerala have mobile container sub-stations.

These sub-stations will be connected with a network of underground cables with specified points where container will be parked to serve the area under its purview.

These new model substations will include low and medium voltage switchgear, motor control centres and variable frequency drives that give better outcomes.

The entire equipment of the sub-station can be fixed inside the container space.

SPDCL chairman and managing director H Harinath Rao told The Hans India that the company was planning cost cutting in construction of electrical substations.

"Advanced technology is available to build indoor electrical substations in lorry containers. Main advantage of this type of substation is their mobile and can be used at optimum level.

First in the state, we will set up the mobile electric substation in Tirupati in container," he said while adding that they were going to increase their numbers substantially.
