Guntur: BJP and VHP leaders staged a protest against the decision of the Guntur Municipal Corporation to demolish the Goddess Mahankali temple near TJPS College here on Friday.

Saiva Kshetram founder Siva Swamy, BJP leaders led by party Guntur rural district president Patibandla Rama Krishna, party leaders Yelchuri Venkateswarulu, Anil Kumar Behra protested at the temple and demanded that the GMC withdraw the decision to demolish the temple. They said that it is not correct decision to demolish the 45-year-old temple. They warned that they will intensify their agitation, if the GMC did not withdraw its decision.

Meanwhile, the GMC decided to widen the road up to 160 feet according to master plan for the smooth flow of traffic. The town planning officials earlier issued notices to the temple authorities for the demolition.

Speaking to the media, GMC commissioner Challa Anuradha said that the GMC asked the temple authorities to demolish the temple for road widening. She assured alternative land for the construction of the temple. She sought cooperation of the temple authorities for development of Guntur city.
