Bhimavaram: In response to a news report published in these columns on June 27 with headline 'Illegal water plants put health at risk', the municipal authorities cracked whip on the illegal plants in town and closed down 13 plants.

The raids were conducted in strict conformity with the directives of District Collector R Muthyala Raju who sought a detailed report on illegal water plants in Bhimavaram and Veeravasaram mandals. Bhimavaram Municipal Commissioner Amaraiah verified for permissions given to the plants. Only five water plants in the town have ISO certificate and water lab certificate while others running the units unauthorised.

It may be mentioned here that the report highlighted the risk to health of people after consuming the water supplied by these illegal water plants. There is possibility for kidney and arthritis problems for consumers because of the impurities exist in the water supplied by these water plants, the report alerted. Acting swiftly, the Collector ordered the municipal commissioner to submit him a report on the illegal water plants in the two mandals.
