Kadapa: In a six separate incidents, police arrested 33 persons in connection with illegal transportation of red sanders and recovered 1.50 tonnes of 48 red sanders logs, 6 cars from them on Saturday.

Addressing press conference here on Saturday, Superintendent of Police K K K Anburajan said apart from 4 interstate smugglers, E N Dastagiri Reddy, G Venkata Subbaiah and two others from V Kota of Chittoor district, one from Katiganahalli of Karnataka state, 5 smugglers from Kadapa district, remaining 23 wood cutters from Tamil Nadu state were arrested.

Acting on tip-off, Kadapa and Mydukuru DSPs, Badvel and Rayachoti Circle Inspectors conducted raids and arrested the accused while indulging in the crime in forest areas. He said that E N Dastagiri Reddy was involved in 62 red sanders smuggling cases while Venkata Subbaiah was accused in 16 cases.

He said the duo were responsible for illegally transporting precious wood from forest areas by organising gangs. The SP warned of initiating stringent action against those who are responsible for indulging in red sanders smuggling.
