Eggs prices nosedive over bird flu scare

The poultry farm owners who used to sell eggs at high rates to cover their lockdown losses, are selling the same at lower prices due to outbreak of avian flu

Rajamahendravaram: The bird flu in other States has shown its effect on egg trading in thedistrict and the prices of eggs are drastically reduced. The price of each egg is decreased to Rs 4.50 from Rs 5.25 posing problem to poultry farmers.

The district has about 200 poultry farms and the daily egg production is 1.1 crore. Of the total production, 40 percent of eggs are consumed locally and the remaining exported to Odisha, Bihar and Assam.

During winter season, vegetable production is reduced in West Bengal and in some other States, therefore, the people in these States prefer eggs from November to February.With the outbreak of bird flu infection, the usage of eggs is reduced in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh etc which also affected the poultry farms busines.

An official of Animal Husbandry department said that there are no bird flu symptoms in the district and eggs can be consumed. The poultry farmers are taking necessary steps, giving vaccines and medication to the birds. The people need not worry in this regard, he said.
