Tirupati: In a laudable gesture, the newly set up TTD trust board in its first meeting itself took several decisions that will have far reaching consequences particularly with regard to education and sports.

The board gave green signal for providing additional hostel facility in all its colleges in the pilgrim city with an outlay of Rs 100 crore which would go a long way in promotion of education in a big way more so for girls.

The TTD is running two junior colleges one each for boys and girls, three degree and postgraduate colleges including one for women students with a total strength of about 7,500 but the hostel facility is only available for about 6,000 students.

As the admission for degree and PG courses is at Rayalaseema zone level there is heavy demand for studying in the TTD run colleges particularly for the college for women and the outsiders require hostel facility.

More than a total of 30,000 apply for seats in TTD colleges every year and this reveals the demand for TTD colleges which have facilities like good buildings, faculty and hostels. Moreover, free food is being provided to the hostel students adding more to the demand for the TTD colleges.

The TTD-run colleges are: SV Arts College, SGS Arts College, SPW Degree and PG College, two junior colleges and SV Oriental College in the city. For long the hostel facility in the colleges remained static resulting in the hostel accommodation congested.

There has always been heavy demand for the hostels ending up with the management admitting more number of students than the actual capacity. Despite vociferous demand from students, parents and also student organisations, the TTD remained unmoved.

Against this backdrop, the board decision to provide Rs 100 crore for additional hostel facility in all its colleges here was welcomed by one and all including student unions. Former principal of TTD SPW College Dr Chitrapu Swarajyalakshmi said that the decision is a boon to women students who are coming from far off places for studying in the TTD college as it is one of the best college in the State.

"Parents are keen on admitting students in the college as it ensures good education and also security,'' she averred. Another initiative taken by the board was construction of a sports complex with an outlay of Rs 10 crore for its employees.

The complex will come up in TTD Printing Press Complex near TTD administrative building and also located in middle of the town accessible to the employees interested in sports and physical exercise to keep them healthy.
