Visakhapatnam: The HPCL-run Skill Development Institute(SDI), Deendayalapuram, organised a training programme 'Jute product stitching operation' for women prisoners at Central Prison here on Thursday. Inaugurated by DIG of Prisons I Srinivasa Rao, the course was introduced for the first batch of trainees.

Speaking on the occasion, he informed that SDI was imparting free training at Central Prison since January 2018 in welding, plumbing trades for male prisoners, setting-up of labs and classrooms.

So far, it trained more than 600 prisoners in the last two years, he said. Training women in jute bags preparation is a noble initiative which enables the candidates to start their own units with very less investment once they come out of the jail, he narrated.

Uniforms, kit bags and study material have been distributed to 30 trainees. Chief head warden and Kanya Kumari, Deputy General manager-administration of SDI C V Narasimha Das of SDI, among others were present.
