Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has introduced a scheme to collect building material wastage with free of cost. The VMC has taken the decision to collect building material waste in view of increasing construction activity in the city. Apart from this, the VMC has finalised plans to maintain cleanliness in the city.

The local body has also provided a call centre in this regard. The VMC staff would collect the waste, if the building owners inform to the call center. According to officials, the VMC has conducted a survey on the construction waste materials in the city. Ranging from 80 tonnes to 100 tonnes of waste is being produced in a day by the construction sector in the city.

The construction companies and private building owners are dumping the construction materials waste at various locations including road margins, vacant lands and public places. Now the wastage of building materials has posed a threat to public life in the city.

In this backdrop, the VMC has decided to shift the building material waste as its responsibility. At present, the construction activity is in full swing across the city following the developments from Amaravati capital construction.

Several private and government organisations have focused to construct new buildings or modernise their old building structures in the city. Moreover, the huge number of commercial establishments is being set up in the city. Now the VMC would collect the building material waste from the building owners, said Mayor K Sridhar. Speaking to The Hans India, he said that the local body wants to maintain the city as pollution free.

He said that the VMC has the capacity to collect 100 tonnes building material waste at present. The VMC staff would shift the material to its dumping yard at Singhnagar. He also said that the building owners should cooperate with the VMC staff.
