With the BS4 to BS6 transition underway, here are the few BS6-compliant cars that are already on sale in India

The Indian car market is on the verge of moving to its strictest but cleanest emission norms yet, BS6 (Bharat Stage 6). There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the shift from BS4 to BS6, which we have cleared comprehensively in the video below.

While the deadline for manufacturers to introduce BS6-engined cars is 31 March 2020, some manufacturers have already begun rolling out cars that meet these norms. In case you were wondering, using BS4 fuel in a BS6 engine shouldn’t have any adverse effects on the latter in a few months as BS6 fuel will be available across the country from April 2020. In fact, Kia claims to have run the Seltos’ BS6-compliant engines on BS4 fuel for more than 1 lakh kilometres without any hiccups.

So if you want to take the BS6 plunge sooner, what are the options right now? Take a look.

Maruti Suzuki

Almost all Maruti petrol engines have been updated to meet the cleaner BS6 norms but its diesel engines will not be available in the BS6 era:

Maruti Alto (Rs 2.94 lakh and Rs 4.15 lakh)

The Alto 800cc, 3-cylinder engine was upgraded to meet BS6 norms a few months back. That saw a slight drop in fuel efficiency from 24.7kmpl to 22.05kmpl.

Maruti S-Presso (Rs 3.69 lakh to Rs 4.91 lakh)

The latest Maruti receives the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder K-Series engine (68PS/90Nm) from the Alto K10. However, it has been updated to meet the BS6 standards in the S-Presso. The S-Presso’s claimed fuel efficiency is 21.7 kmpl while the lower variants(Std, Lxi) have a slightly lower figure of 21.4kmpl.

Maruti Swift (Rs 5.14 lakh to Rs 8.89 lakh), Dzire (Rs 5.83 lakh to Rs 9.58 lakh)

Both the hatchback and sub-4m sedan get a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 83PS/113Nm, the same as before. Fuel economy has dropped marginally from the earlier 22kmpl to 21.21kmpl.

Maruti WagonR 1.2 (Rs 5.10 lakh to Rs 5.91 lakh)

The WagonR is available with a BS4 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and the same 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder unit from Swift, Ignis which meets BS6 norms. However, the fuel efficiency at 20.52kmpl is surprisingly lower than the Swift and WagonR despite being the same unit.

Maruti Baleno (Rs 5.58 lakh to Rs 8.90 lakh)

Both the 1.2-litre K12B petrol and 1.2-litre DualJet mild-hybrid engine on the Maruti Baleno meet BS6 emission norms. The naturally aspirated petrol is borrowed from other Maruti cars and delivers the same power and torque figures but with a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.01 kmpl (MT) and 19.56 kmpl (CVT).

The mild-hybrid petrol paired with only a 5-speed MT, though, has a 7PS higher power figure of around 90PS but with an unchanged 113Nm of torque. Even the mileage is higher at 23.87kmpl.

Maruti Ertiga (Rs 7.55 lakh to Rs 10.06 lakh), XL6 (Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 11.46 lakh)

Maruti people-mover gets a set of 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines but it’s only the petrol that has been upgraded to meet the BS6 norms. This same engine is also available on its Nexa counterpart, the XL6.

The BS6-compliant K15B 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol (105PS/138Nm) engine with mild-hybrid tech is available with both a 5-speed manual and an optional 4-speed AT. The fuel efficiency number stands at 19.01kmpl for the MT and 17.99kmpl for the AT.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk (Rs 26.80 lakh to Rs 27.60 lakh)

Jeep became the first manufacturer in its segment to offer a BS6-compliant diesel engine coupled with an automatic (9-speed unit) transmission option on the Trailhawk. It is still powered by the 2.0-litre Multijet, 4-cylinder unit but produces 170PS of power, 3PS less than the BS4 unit, while the torque output remains unchanged at 350Nm. The Trailhawk claimed mileage stands at 14.9kmpl.

Kia Seltos (Rs 9.69 lakh to Rs 16.99 lakh)

The Kia Seltos gets three engine options in total: a 1.5-litre petrol and diesel along with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol. All three of these engines comply with BS6 norms, making the Seltos the only offering in the compact SUV segment to offer these more sophisticated engines. Here are the specifications.

Even the fuel efficiency figures remain unchanged at 23.87kmpl for the mild hybrid version and 21kmpl (19.56kmpl for CVT) for the regular unit.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.14 lakh)

Joining the Maruti Swift in the mid-size hatchback segment, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios petrol also meets the BS6 norms ahead of the deadline. This unit makes 83PS/114Nm and is available with a 5-speed MT and AMT. The diesel Grand i10 Nios is still a BS4-compliant unit.

Hyundai Elantra (Rs 15.89 lakh to Rs 20.39 lakh)

Hyundai rival to the Honda Civic has received a facelift and has ditched the diesel with the update. The petrol-only offering is a BS6-compliant unit that delivers 152PS/192Nm and has a 14.6kmpl of fuel efficiency rating. Its expected to get a diesel engine in the future but only if Hyundai sees enough demand.

Will you consider getting any of these BS6-compliant cars ahead of the deadline or will you wait till the implementation of the rules and availability of the cleaner fuel across the country? Let us know in the comments below.
