Hyderabad: RKEC Projects Limited, a listed infra company recently said it has completed 16.73 per cent of a project received from the National Authority of India to construct a new four lane bridge over the river Ganga near Farakkha in West Bengal.

It is among the 12 bridges planned to be constructed over Ganges, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheme of projects.

The construction of 5.468 km bridge cum approach road along NH-34 on EPC mode is given under a joint venture to CQCE-RKEC. The JV was awarded on August 20, 2018 while the site was officially handed over on December 20, 2018.

The Vishakapatnam-based company informed that as on April 13, 2019, 16.73 per cent of the project has been completed at an expense of Rs 88 crore.

RKEC Projects said it has mobilised equipment worth over Rs 100 crore consisting of eight hydraulic piling machines, 10 heavy duty cranes, three batching plants, 12 concrete mixtures, three concrete pumps with a boom placer and two launching girders of 60 meters span etc.

"The construction of the bridge had been taken up from both Farakka and Malda side to speeden-up the completion. The project would directly generate employment of about 21.03 lakh man-days during construction," CMD of RKEC Projects Ltd, Garapati Radhakrishna said.

The official further said the existing Farakka rail cum road barrage is the only surface communication link between North-Eastern region of India with the rest of the country including Nepal and Bhutan.
