A student can now pursue dual degree simultaneously from same or any other institution as the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved the proposal of the dual degree to improve the career prospects of students.

However, the students have to choose a degree in regular mode and another in open or through distance learning. Now, a student can pursue an engineering course and economics at the same time. The dual degree option not only helps the students in improving their skills but also provides greater career opportunities.

The detailed guidelines will be notified soon by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

A committee under UGC vice-chairman Bhushan Patwardhan has been working for a year with a goal of introducing a dual degree from the same or different universities through regular, open or distance learning. However, as the regular degree has the minimum attendance requirement, it was decided to opt for another degree through open or distant mode.

In 2012, a similar committee was formed aiming to roll out dual-degree option but was failed to take off.
