Pleasure and pain are inevitable part of life. Pleasure is an interval between two pains. People usually experience pain because of their past karma (deeds) or as destiny would have it. But little do people know that you write your own destiny. The Karma is a result of one's actions. So whatever happens is because of their own deeds.

We have often heard the line, "As you sow, so you reap". This is the law of karma which has been propagated since time immemorial. But people forget that the same hands which is responsible for the bad karma can remove the same with the same hands. The prescription for this is as the saying goes in Sanskrit "kuru punyam ahorathram" which means keep doing good deeds day in and day out. This will wipe out our bad karma and thus help one escape from the possible consequences.

The law of karma is not an iron law as people think but one has to learn the art of doing them. This is precisely what is called karma koushalam in Bhagavad-Gita. Karma will not bind us if it is done as an act of worship. People can easily escape from the consequence of karmas if it is done with the awareness of Atma. Karmas done with body consciousness always binds the individual. Selfless deeds paves the way for liberation.

Adi Shankara and many other seers have propagated this theory to help ordinary folks escape from the clutches of past karmas. Even the realised souls are engaged in karmas to set an example for the world though they are not obligated to do so.

So remember as you relax over the weekend, turn your thoughts towards bettering your current status with good karma for Karma is the law of life.
