United Nations Public Service Day: Know its Origin, Theme & Significance

Every year, on June 23rd United Nations Public Service is celebrated. Its aim is to appreciate the value of public service to the common people. On this day, it highlights the varied contribution as well as significant role played by the public service in the development process across the world.

This day encourages all youngsters to pursue successful career in the public sector or office, this day also acknowledges the work done by the public servants as well as their dedication.

Each year, the United Nations conducts a Public Service Awards ceremony in order to reward the contributions of public services institution worldwide. Also numerous public service organizations hold varied events to mark this special day and also to recognize the valuable role undertaken by public servants for the improvement of the society.

When varied events are conducted it helps key stakeholders, UN officials, public servants across the world to respect as well as honor the work of public servants.

Origin

In the year 2002, on December 20th the General Assembly, selected 23rd June as Public Service Day after they adopting a resolution 57/277, which recognizes the above day. And in the year, 2003, the United Nations established the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) Programme, which was then later reviewed in 2016 to align with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The aim of UNPSA is to reward innovation as well as excellence in public services, so that it can have effective and responsible public administration in varied nations worldwide.
