The virus continues to hold sway over the world

A memoir in the making

Thanks, Hans India for providing its readers glimpses of power corridors through the columns of Dr Mohan Kanda, former Chief Secretary, government of Andhra Pradesh ('Memories of a different era', June 10 and 18), which is very interesting. This is how a beautiful memoir is being made. Day-to-day happenings of our government is covered by print and electronic media, but what happens behind the curtain, only a handful of bureaucrats like Dr Mohan Kanda know. We enjoyed the softness of political bigwigs like Indira Gandhi, NTR and YSR through his column. A polite pat on the back, a little smile from your boss, make it an unforgettable moment. We hope some critical analysis by Dr Mohan of his bosses' way of work and instructions (of course without naming) will add cherry to his column. Many think that newspapers' life is for a day, but such columns make it memorable and also go on record. Hope The Hans India would bring some more gems from former bureaucrats to share their memorable experiences in your newspaper columns.

When will this hate, enmity end?

The virus continues to hold sway over the world. To add to the troubles, we have border skirmishes with China leading to the unfortunate death of 20 soldiers. There was some hope of unity when the pandemic broke out, but the world seems equally fragmented as before, if not more. Going by the social media interactions, the virus scare has not united people at even individual or small groups levels. From individuals to the governments, the fights in the name of religion, caste, language, borders, region, and so on, simply continue unabated. Is there any hope for a united humanity? The only hope one sees now is the threat of an alien or extra-terrestrial destruction of the entire globe at one go. We have not even made an alternative arrangement to migrate to other places if Earth itself, as a whole, is in trouble. As Carl Sagan worries in his book, 'The Pale Blue Dot', it is difficult to understand the human tendency to keep fighting, arguing, and bickering for mastery of a moment in time and for a small pixel of space. Education in any sphere of arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences, or technology has never acted as a soothing balm to humanity. When will the world come together? When will the borders dissolve? When will the hate and anger go? Our ancient rishis gave us the best mantra for universal harmony - everything is Brahman, the only reality.

Continue lockdown to contain Covid-19

India is the fourth worst hit nation in the world by Covid-19 according to the latest reports. The Central government has imposed nationwide lockdown strictly nearly 70 days throughout the country to contain the massive spurt of Covid-19. The frontline warriors of Covid-19 have been still fighting rigorously with the contagion since the first Covid-19 case was reported in the country. When there were 250 Covid-19 cases in the country, we tightened up norms and stayed at homes following the government orders. At 2.5 lakhs Covid-19 cases, we are freed from lockdown. The decision which the Central government took makes all ways for Covid-19 to spread easily. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that 'there would be no re-imposition of lockdown and all CMs should get ready for unlock 2.0 in their States' on Wednesday. Modi's statements on corona crisis are deeply disturbing. It is also ridiculous to hear from Modi that Covid-19 is under control. As we all know, the unlocking of lockdown is only for scaling up the economy. The endeavour of the police and doctors during the nationwide lockdown will go in vain by this unlock. I request Narendra Modi on behalf of all Indians to please take appropriate measures on Covid-19 after reviewing the corona crisis carefully.
