Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is imposing penalty to Hyderabad citizens for several reasons. People who are violating sanitation norms are being fined by the officials.

Since the drive was started on May 24, the total collections of penalties touched nearly Rs 2 crore until Tuesday. 10,801 penalties were issued in these six months span. Cases-wise, Khairatabad stood at top position with 767 fines (Rs 12,21,900), followed by Chandanagar region with 655 cases (Rs 49,30,300). Rs 17,03,600 penalties were imposed only on Tuesday due to several reasons.

Penalties in other areas are as follows: Kapra with 462 cases (Rs 4,70,100), Uppal with 549 cases (Rs 8,13,920), LB Nagar with 553 cases ( Rs 3,12,550), Saroor Nagar with 655 cases ( Rs 3,56,850), Musheerabad with 502 cases (RS 6,75,300), Jubilee Hills with 568 cases (Rs 8,78,800), and Moosapet with 495 cases ( Rs 11,73,650).

RC Puram Patancheru has seen the least number of fines with 51 cases and Rs 1,42,900 fines, followed by Yusufguda with 89 cases and Rs 2,12,500 fines. Violations such as leaving waste into the storm water drain, not building a silt chamber, letting sewage onto the roads, and open dumping of construction debris are the major reasons for slapping penalties.

"It is a good sign to impose penalty for the people who are avoiding sanitation norms. If the process continues, we can experience a wonderful city with in very short period," says Madhav Kumar, a resident of Khairatabad.

"I paid a penalty of Rs 6000 for throwing waste water on roads. After paying fine, I am leaving the water in the running drain. So if everybody shows same change, GHMC will be successful in their drive and they can achieve what we need," says Raju, the owner of Satya Tea Shop.
