Hyderabad: GHMC has pitched to desilt drains in the wake of rainy season in the city limits of Greater Hyderabad with an estimate cost of Rs 38.24 crore. About 1,000 km of the area in the GHMC limits is covered with dirt channels, rainwater drains, 216 major drains and 735 km of pipeline and small-size drains.

According to the Ziauddin Mohammed, the chief engineer for maintenance at GHMC, the tender process for the work with Rs 38.24 crore has been completed, in which it is planning to desilt the major pipelines using advanced machineries and recyclers for small-size drains. Earlier, the GHMC used to desilt the drains only a month before the monsoon season and due to the incomplete works, it received several criticisms from the public. But from 2017, the GHMC, in order to avoid such situations, pitched to desilt the drains throughout the year.

Ziauddin said desiltation process is being carried out in two phases: first is the pre-monsoon works, in which two-thirds of the works are completed, and the second desiltation works are taken up after a special team looks at the drains after monsoon, which is mostly after October 31.

As part of this, tenders for desiltation of 327 drains were processed at an estimated cost of Rs 38.24 crores and work is being processed. In these 327 drains, 83 major drains are being desilted with machines, 23 drains with the help of recyclers and 214 small drains are being manually desilted. The engineering wing of GHMC will be responsible for the work.

GHMC Commissioner M Dana Kishore had issued instructions to the engineering department to complete 100% of the works by the end of May and before the monsoon season. The works should continue even after May if the need occurs due to rains. Dana Kishore said that the tasks should be transparent and should reduce any discomfort to public and prevent environmental pollution.

The commissioner also instructed to avoid any type of allegations in the process of works. He ordered the engineering department to take a confirmation note about the details of the labours indulged in the work, quantity of the mud removed and shifted to dumping yards from the prominent people in the area. The works of 92.10 km have been completed in the Greater Hyderabad and the rest will be processed soon.

The mud and the waste collected from the drains will be shifted to nearby dumping yard by the contractors. The GHMC has planned to complete the desiltation works by the end of May and will be also carried out even later if needed.
