Tirupati: The BJP Intellectual Forum organised a meeting at Arts College auditorium in the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) here on Wednesday, remembering emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Addressing the meeting, BJP national secretary Y Satya Kumar said emergency days were the darkest chapter in India's democratic history. Emergency was imposed for 21 months beginning from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977. Satya Kumar alleged that Indira Gandhi had issued orders to arrest more than 1 lakh opposition leaders across the country.

During emergency, functioning of independent democratic institutions were curtailed, citizens were deprived of their fundamental rights and judges were suspended. BJP leader K Vishnuvardhan Reddy, BJYM State president N Ramesh Naidu, Prof S Vijaya Bhaskar Rao and students were present.
