Historic U.S.-Iran Peace Deal Set for Friday Signing in Switzerland as Hormuz Reopening Speculation Appears
In Short
- Iran says it will begin final nuclear and sanctions relief talks with the U.S. this week in Switzerland.
- Several things are expected for the new peace deal to be signed in Burgenstock, and about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

There has been a significant shift in the West Asian conflict with Iran as it has confirmed final stage talks with the United States on its nuclear programme, and sanctions relief will be held later this week. It comes at the same time as U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imminent opening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which led to a sudden drop in global oil prices.
The much-anticipated peace deal that will end the almost four-month-long heavy fighting that started with the U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran will be officially signed on Friday, June 19, 2026. The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed that the signing ceremony will be held at the Bürgenstock resort, a highly secure location, in a secret, joint decision by the two standard mediators – Pakistan and Qatar – and the two countries involved. After the ink is dry on the MOU, officials say a 60-day period will be set to negotiate final details of the comprehensive deal.
One of the most important aspects of the peace process is the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy chokepoint. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has stressed that the full and unconditional reopening of the waterway is critical to the recovery of the high economic costs imposed by soaring oil and gas prices, despite some diplomatic ruffles. Officials from the United States have insisted that the passage must be completely free of tolls, while Iranian officials have raised the prospect of imposing “service fees” on tankers carrying traffic from the Gulf. However, Swiss negotiations are closely monitored by international observers, with top diplomats from Iran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, expected to arrive, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance indicating he is looking to release an early draft of the agreement.
