Bengaluru: A Bengaluru court on Wednesday declined to entertain the bail plea of Amulya Leona, a college student who has been accused of raising slogans of Long live Pakistan" at a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the capital on February 20, earlier this year.
The court opined that Amulya Leona Noronha, 19, the accused could get herself involved in a similar offence which would impact peace at large if she is released. Amulya, a student of journalism and English at a Bengaluru college, if released, may also abscond, the court observed.
Videos of Amulya Leona shouting "Pakistan Zindabad" at the protest went viral and caused widespread outrage. The Bengaluru police had booked Amulya on charges of sedition and promoting enmity between groups. Amulya's friends attempted to defend her saying that she was attempting to shout zindabad in the name of all nations, including Pakistan and India in a message of universal brotherhood.
The 60th additional city civil and sessions judge in Bengaluru rejected her bail application stating that she may abscond if released.
Amulya was led off the stage at the protest in February and was subsequently arrested. Unidentified vandals pelted stones are their house in Koppa after the incident in Bengaluru.
Amulya Leona was invited frequently to protests and demonstrations because she was seen as a powerful speaker. Her father, however, was quoted in the media then, as disapproving her actions.
