Coronavirus in India: India's Coronavirus positive cases crossed 11 lakh after the country reported the biggest spike of over 40,000 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours. The country has reported the biggest single-day spike of 40,425 cases, which is an indication that the deadly virus is now thinning out much faster in India. This is the first time that the country reported over 40,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of people succumbed because of the virus reached 27,497 after 681 fresh fatalities were reported.

There are 3,90,459 active cases in the country, as of now more than seven lakh people have recovered and discharged after contracting Covid-19.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in India with 1,29,032 active cases and over 11,800 deaths. In terms of death toll, Delhi is at second spot with 3,628 cases. Recently, the national capital has witnessed a significant drop in cases. It currently has over 16,000 active cases. Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a sharp spike in daily cases, it has over 18,000 active cases.

While cases seem to be declining in urban areas, rural India is witnessed in a bigger spike in cases. Experts fear that cases could blow out of proportion across rural India due to lack of healthcare infrastructure.

Even though India's fatality and recovery rate are improving, experts fear that cases could keep rising for a longer period if strict social distancing norms are not followed. Many experts have also said that India could see its peak by mid-September if all restrictions and physical distancing norms are followed.
